Churchwide Family Fun Picnic June 29, 2008 Celebrating VBS Week Right after Worship!

Service of Healing and Wholeness. This monthly service provides a very special quiet time for worship in the presence of the Holy Spirit through singing, scripture, prayer and Holy Communion. If you have any questions feel free to talk with one of the Pastors or speak with either Cindy Mannucci or Amy Payne. We look forward to seeing you at the next Healing and Wholeness Service on Sunday, July 13, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. Everyone is invited to attend this meaningful service.

SUMMER CHOIR You are invited to come join our SUMC SUMMER CHOIR during any Sunday in July. There are no Thursday rehearsals during July; we simply do a warm-up rehearsal each Sunday at 9:30 am in preparation for the 10:30 am service. Come lend your voice to our SUMMER CHOIR. Guaranteed to be fun . . . according to our Music Director!

Bell Open Houses. Sunday, August 17 and 24 we will have the bells set up in the parlor so people can try out the bells and talk to some ringers about the choirs. We'd love you to stop by and explore the opportunities that are available!

SUMC Spring 2009 Concert- All choirs this year will join together in a Spirng Concert, March 15, 2009. Please keep that date in mind; it will be an event not to be missed!

NEED A ROOM AT THE CHURCH? - If you are planning a meeting or event at the church, please make sure the space you need is available before you get too far into the planning process. You can schedule the room(s) by contacting Elizabeth Smith, Office Administrator at 703-451-2375 or info@springfieldvaumc.org.
Do not assume your group is on the calendar. Many groups utilize our building, so you must call Elizabeth to be sure your group has the place you will need. Also, please call Elizabeth to arrange for your group to have information or sign-up sheets on the clipboard table.

NEED A RIDE? The SUMC Helping Hands Ministry has drivers who have volunteered to help get folks to doctor's appointments, church services, etc. Give us a call (a day or two ahead of time if possible) at 703-644-0339 or the church office, 703-451-2375.

CAN'T MAKE SUNDAY WORSHIP? Check out our Wednesday night service held weekly at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel. Hear great messages and share in Holy Communion. No reservations necessary. There is a pew waiting for you.

The SUMC Giant Foods Gift Card Program - needs your help! If you shop at Giant Foods, please consider using the Gift Cards to pay for your purchases. For those of you who are not familiar with this program, it is a fund raising activity for the church where we sell gift cards that can be used to shop at any Giant Grocery store. Giant has increased its rebate plan and the Church makes 5% from each card purchased. We also need help selling the cards. Each week, Angie Sawyer is in the Parlor from 10:00-10:30 selling the cards, but if additional folks assist in selling even once a quarter (for the early or late service), it would be a big help. Please consider participating in and/or volunteering for this valuable program. For more information, please contact Angie Sawyer at 703-921-9189.

BOOK CLUB - The Book Club meets for tea and genteel conversation at 4:00 p.m. in the Parlor, usually on the third Sunday of every month . New readers are always welcome. We are currently taking a break for the summer. Next meeting: September 21, 2008: Middlemarch, George Eliot.

QUILT MINISTRY - Do you like to sew? Do you like to talk? If you have an affinity for either of those two activities--Please join our Quilt Ministry. We meet thesecond Wednesday of each month at 1 p.m. in the Parlor. Expert sewing skills are not a requirement! We make Prayer Quilts for members of our faith community who are ill or hospitalized. The finished quilts are dedicated in worship, and people are given the opportunity to tie a knot on the quilt and say a prayer for recipient of the quilt. Call Rose Horton at 703-569-3821 for more information.

BRIDGE TWICE A WEEK! - We have two opportunities for you to play Bridge here at SUMC. We have groups that meet on Mondays and Fridays at 1 p.m. in the Parlor. Come join in the fun!

MEN'S BIBLE STUDY - Join the Men's Bible Study on Tuesdays at 4 p.m. in the Parlor!

SANDWICH MINISTRY - We provide over 550 sandwiches weekly to feed the homeless. The regular church operating budget does not cover the $300 weekly cost of this mission project, so we depend on donations. Any amount will help cover the costs of this important project and is welcome. Please write "Sandwich Ministry" on the offering envelope or your check. For contributions of $100 or more, sign up on the Sandwich Ministry Sponsor's Board and your dedication will be printed in the bulletin. If you would like to help make sandwiches, join us at 9:15 in the kitchen. We have lots of fun and welcome any helping hands!

ECHO - School vacation is just getting started, but ECHO is already at work on a project that will benefit students when school starts next year. We are now collecting supplies to distribute to needy families in late summer and early fall. Currently, we have the greatest need for the following: new (or gently used) backpacks, fabric pouches for pencils, plastic school boxes, student scissors, markers, colored pencils, 3-ring binders, ruled paper, tabbed subject dividers, and 12-inch rulers.
Soon, we will also need all of the other kinds of supplies (such as pencils and glue) that students use. Volunteers pack supplies appropriate for particular grade levels into donated backpacks to have on hand when parents come to ECHO for assistance. As you may know, the cost of school supplies represents a large seasonal expense for families who are already struggling with the costs of housing, food, and transportation. If you are interested in helping as a volunteer packer, e-mail mailto:echoadmin@cox.net. If you would like to donate supplies, please bring them to ECHO, Monday through Friday between 9:30 am and 12:30 pm or Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday evening between 7:00 and 9:00.
There is a continuing need for food and hygiene items, and, as prices rise, that need grows more urgent for people or families experiencing a crisis. ECHO is currently out of, or low on: powdered milk, vegetable oil, juice, jelly, tuna, peanut butter, and 2 lb. bags of sugar, laundry detergent, shaving cream, shampoo, and adult pain medicines and toothpaste. If you would like to donate even a few of these items, please bring them to ECHO during the hours shown above.

OCCUPATIONAL DIRECTORY - Check out the SUMC Occupational Directory, located on the clipboard table listing services and expertise provided by our SUMC church family. It is a reference for jobs and services our congregation offers; a source for finding people who have expertise in a particular area; and a resource for finding out about new careers or career changes. Please contact the individuals directly. If you want to be listed, forms are also on the clipboard table; please put them in mailbox #52. Questions? Contact Gwen Nelson (703) 425-8637 or (703) 851-5655.
