What's happenin' at SUMC?

WELCOME TO OUR GUESTS - Welcome to Springfield UMC! Childcare is provided during worship. Activity bags and bulletins are available for children. Large print bulletins and hymnals and hearing devices are available. Please ask the ushers for assistance.

SUMMER OFFICE HOURS:The office will close at 12 p.m. on Fridays throughout the summer. This is in accordance with the District Office's summer hours. Monday -Thursday the hours will be 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

SUNDAY SCHOOL for children, youth, and adults meet at 9:15 a.m. Come join in the excitement of learning about God, Jesus, and how we can be better disciples! The children are divided up by ages and the teachers are psyched for a great year!

The SUMMER CHOIR needs you! Come join our Summer Choir any Sunday during July with a rehearsal at 9:30 am (to learn the anthem of the day) in preparation for the 10:30 am service. All adults and youth are welcome to join us any Sunday of July. No commitment necessary, no evening rehearsals, guaranteed wonderful experience for all who enjoy singing! Contact Dr. Linda Monson at 703-250-0032, if you have any questions about summer choir.

A Time for Prayer & Reflection - every Thursday, 5-6 p.m., Room 208. The Power of Prayer - God encourages and strengthens His people through prayer. Our heavenly father loves you and desires for you to be in conversation with him ... He wants you to develop and maintain a personal relationship and dialogue with him. Often times the busyness of our lives keeps us from this special connectedness with our God. So, we have set aside a weekly time for prayer & reflection on Thursday's from 5-6 p.m. in Room 208. Anyone is welcome to come to pray and lay individual joys & concerns before the Lord. Let's pray together - to seek the Lord in new ways - and watch God transform our lives, the church, our community, and the world. If you have questions please talk with Cindy Mannucci and Dawn Mosteller.

RENEW YOUR MARRIAGE VOWS On June 6 at 5 p.m. join couples from SUMC as they renew their marriage vows in a ceremony to be held in the Chapel. Recommit yourself to your spouse and to your marriage! After the brief ceremony, all the couples will go out to dinner together to celebrate! We hope you will consider taking part in this meaningful service.

Praise Service and "Super Summer Sundays"  continues with our second Praise Service at 9:15 a.m. in the Social Hall. On July 5th, in lieu of Sunday School, come to the Social Hall, where we'll "clap our hands" and "tap our feet" as we praise God in a casual, family-friendly, worship service. Children are encouraged to worship with their families during this service; however, for your 'wee little ones,' our loving childcare staff is available upstairs in the nursery and toddler room. Parent pagers are available for your peace of mind.

Youth Mission Trip July 12-17: This summer we will return to Impact Richmond in Richmond, VA. This is a great opportunity to serve, learn, and worship together. Open to youth entering 7-12th grades and to adults of all ages. More information at: http://www.impactrichmond.org/.

Vacation Bible School for rising kindergarteners through fifth graders will be July 20-25, with our Sunday VBS celebration on July 26th. And the theme is CROCODILE DOCK! Come join us for an exciting week down on the bayou! Five fun-filled days of music, dancing, skits, crafts, games, and snacks. Our adventure concludes with a Sunday celebration on July 26th. We are expecting many children to attend our popular VBS program, so please mark the dates so that your "helping hands" will be available for this memorable event! Registration is open now at http://www.groupvbs.com/webtoybox/myvbs/sumc2009

NEED A ROOM AT THE CHURCH? - If you are planning a meeting or event at the church, please make sure the space you need is available before you get too far into the planning process. You can schedule the room(s) by contacting Elizabeth Smith, Office Administrator at 703-451-2375 or info@springfieldvaumc.org.
Do not assume your group is on the calendar. Many groups utilize our building, so you must call Elizabeth to be sure your group has the place you will need. Also, please call Elizabeth to arrange for your group to have information or sign-up sheets on the clipboard table.

CAN'T MAKE SUNDAY WORSHIP? Check out our Wednesday night service held weekly at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel. Hear great messages and share in Holy Communion. No reservations necessary. There is a pew waiting for you.

Great News!  The SUMC Giant Foods Gift Card Program is continuing!  Susan Grieg-Shirley has graciously stepped up to help keep this program going. For those of you who are not familiar with this program, it is a fund raising activity for the church where we sell gift cards that can be used to shop at any Giant Grocery store. Giant has increased its rebate plan and the Church makes 5% from each card purchased. Susan will be in the Parlor from AFTER the 10:30 service selling cards. The cards will be on sale a couple of times each month. Please support this valuable program and pick up a card.

BOOK CLUB - The Book Club meets for tea and genteel conversation at 4:00 p.m. in the Parlor, usually on the third Sunday of every month . New readers are always welcome. We are currently taking a break for the summer. Next meeting:  September 20, 2009: Portrait of a Lady, Henry James.

QUILT MINISTRY - Do you like to sew? Do you like to talk? If you have an affinity for either of those two activities--Please join our Quilt Ministry. We meet the second Wednesday of each month at 1 p.m. in the Parlor. Expert sewing skills are not a requirement! We make Prayer Quilts for members of our faith community who are ill or hospitalized. The finished quilts are dedicated in worship, and people are given the opportunity to tie a knot on the quilt and say a prayer for recipient of the quilt. Call Rose Horton at 703-569-3821 for more information.

BRIDGE TWICE A WEEK! - We have two opportunities for you to play Bridge here at SUMC. We have groups that meet on Mondays and Fridays at 1 p.m. in the Parlor. Come join in the fun!

MEN'S BIBLE STUDY - Join the Men's Bible Study on Tuesdays at 4 p.m. in the Parlor!

WOMEN'S BIBLE STUDY - Join the Women's Bible Study on Thursdays at 10 a.m. in the Parlor!

SANDWICH MINISTRY - We provide over 550 sandwiches weekly to feed the homeless. The regular church operating budget does not cover the $300 weekly cost of this mission project, so we depend on donations. Any amount is welcome and will help cover the costs of this important project. Please write "Sandwich Ministry" on the offering envelope or your check. For contributions of $100 or more, sign up on the Sandwich Ministry Sponsor's Board and your dedication will be printed in the bulletin. If you would like to help make sandwiches, join us at 9:15 in the kitchen. We have lots of fun and welcome any helping hands!

ECHO NEWS The local US Postal Service Letter Carriers are ECHO's heroes! Their May food drive brought in 19,000 pounds of non-perishable food for hungry people in Burke and Springfield, a 54% increase over last year's drive. This outpouring of help means that area residents understand and want to respond to the devastating effects of the economic downturn on many of our neighbors. Thanks to all people who donated food and to the 75+ volunteers, including teams from Adat Reyim Congregation, Rolling Valley Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Grace Christian Reform Youth, and Grace Presbyterian Youth who spent many hours sorting and shelving the hundreds of cans and boxes. Even though schools are now closed for summer vacation, ECHO is getting ready for Back-to-School. During June and July, we collect school supplies to distribute in August and September to families with children in kindergarten through high school. Please help us by donating commonly needed items such as notebooks, filler paper, binders (1½" only), crayons, new or gently- used backpacks, pencils, small dictionaries, and 4 function calculators. You can bring your donations to ECHO at 7205 Old Keene Mill Road on weekdays between 9:30 am and 12:30 pm, or Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings between 7:00 and 9:00. Are you interested in volunteering, but need to stay close to home and have flexible hours? ECHO is looking for someone who is willing to do EBay sales of collectible items as a part of our fund-raising effort. You would need a computer and an internet connection, but you don't have to have experience. ECHO will train you. If you would like to find out more about this volunteer opportunity, e-mail echoadmin@verizon.net.

OCCUPATIONAL DIRECTORY - Check out the SUMC Occupational Directory, located on the clipboard table listing services and expertise provided by our SUMC church family. It is a reference for jobs and services our congregation offers; a source for finding people who have expertise in a particular area; and a resource for finding out about new careers or career changes. Please contact the individuals directly. If you want to be listed, forms are also on the clipboard table; please put them in mailbox #52. Questions?
