When God's People Pray: Six Sessions on the Transforming Power
of Prayer, by Jim Cymbala "Prayer can
change lives and circumstances like nothing else can. What are the keys that
unlock its power, that turn prayer from a mere activity into a vital link with
God and all his resources? In this DVD, Jim Cymbala, pastor of Brooklyn
Tabernacle, shows you and your small group truths about prayer that God has
used to turn his own church from a tiny, struggling inner-city congregation
into a vital, thriving community of believers who pray with passion, focus, and
faith. Featuring teachings by Jim Cymbala and video interviews of ordinary
people who have received extraordinary answers to their prayers, these six
sessions will help you pray with new confidence. Session Topics:
God's Heart for Us, The Amazing Power of Prayer, Obedience in Prayer, The Word
of God and Prayer, Why Prayer Matters, Creating a Prayer Ministry in Your
Church."

Are you
interested in discussing hot news topics and current events from a Christian
perspective? Theologian Karl Barth once gave this advice to some young
pupils of his: "Take your Bible in one hand and take your newspaper in the
other, and read both. But interpret newspapers from you Bible."
That advice is the foundation of this conversation group every Sunday in Room
114. The starting point for the conversation each week will come from a
new Internet resource, "The Wired Word." Every Thursday, participants
will receive an email that includes biblical commentary and
thought-provoking questions related to a topic in the news that week.
This class will strive to be inviting for all, regardless of where you are
on your spiritual journey. If you don't have time to read the
materials before class, pick up the materials on Sunday and join us for
fellowship and lively discussions. The class is open for anyone to "pop
in" or pick up anytime. There are plans to have an option for continued
discussion onlne for those of you who are interested. If you have any
questions or would like further information, contact Jay Barr at (703) 455-8089
or jaybarr@live.com . |

us in an Exciting Ministry
Sandwich
Ministry - Making
sandwiches for the homeless while enjoying fellowship with other adults. John
and Peggy Park, coordinators. Meets in the kitchen at 9:15am on Sunday. The
2007 Sandwich Ministry sponsor board has been posted at the top of the steps by
the entry door. We provide over 500 sandwiches weekly to feed the homeless,
either through the Eleanor Kennedy Shelter on Route 1 or Martha's Table. The
regular church operating budget does not cover the cost of this mission
project, so we depend on donations to fund the cost, approximately $300 a week.
Any amount is welcome to help cover the costs of this important project. Please
write "for sandwich ministry" on the offering envelope or your check. For
contributions of $100 or more, sign up on the Sandwich Ministry Sponsor's Board
and your dedication will be printed in the bulletin.
BOOK CLUB
- The SUMC Book Club meets on the third Sunday every month at 4:00 p.m. in the
Parlor for tea and conversation. A schedule of books is published in the
newsletter and the bulletin. New readers are always welcome.
FEED MY
SHEEP - SUMC is participating in a year long food drive
to support local outreach efforts. Everyone is encouraged to bring at least one
non-perishable food item to church each Sunday. Place these items in one of the
Missions baskets labeled "Feed My Sheep" that are located throughout the
Church.
DIET-TO-GO
DRIVER NEEDED -
The Diet-To-Go Company in Lorton donates surplus meals to the Eleanor Kennedy
Shelter (5-8 boxes) twice a week. We need a driver for the 1st Wednesday of
every month. If you have a vehicle and are interested in picking up and
delivering, please contact John or Peggy Park at (703) 866-1505 or
Jjparkk@aol.com
COMMUNION
OUTSIDE OUR WALLS - Every Communion Sunday, communion
kits are consecrated on our altar by our pastors then taken by our trained Lay
Communion Visitors to those who are unable to attend our services. If you know
someone who could benefit from this ministry, please contact one of the
pastors, or Paul McMahan at (703) 569-1265.
PENNIES
FROM HEAVEN -
Have you ever wondered why we have that red toolbox in the narthex? Your "small
change" donations help support our youth ministry.
